help with guile 1.3

this problem started out when i begin playing with ALE. i tried to compile
the latest guile and kept getting errors. i got the following when
trying to run guile by itself:
/usr/share/guile/1.3/ice-9/boot-9.scm:3018:13: In expression
(libguile-config-stamp):
/usr/share/guile/1.3/ice-9/boot-9.scm:3018:13: Unbound variable:
libguile-config-stamp
i'm not sure what i did wrong when i compiled guile, but i got no error
messages to speak of. i'm running redhat 6.1 with all available redhat
updates. any help figuring this out would be much appreciated.
