There are numerous protocols that support graphics on top of a simple
character stream. After all, what is the xterm/ansi protocol but
such a protocol? It supports color and font-changes, lines, frames,
and even mouse-clicks. Extending the protocol to support images and
bit-map graphics isn't all that hard - DEC did it over a decade ago.
It seems the MGR window system (http://www.linuxdoc.org/HOWTO/MGR-HOWTO.html)
may also be compatible with xterm (conceptually, I don't know about
the actual MGR protocol).
