I do not want to try to put down radical ideas. However, I cannot help
thinking that of the several radical digressions on the Emacs theme,
GNU emacs is still the one that prevails. This also includes a CL based
emacs (the name escapes me at the moment) and a scheme ditto (edwin).

XEmacs is still in business of course, but maintains a rather strict
compability with the programming environment of GNU Emacs.

While emacs lisp contains a lot of legacy baggage, I have always felt
that it would be difficult to compete with the size and activity of
the emacs community. I for one would not like to reimplement something
like gnus or calc.

But on the other hand, a java based emacs might be able to attract a
whole new audience, so who knows.
