well fyi, i have naively hacked the posted code (which was initially
posted back in 1997, i believe) into beguiled:

	http://www.glug.org/people/ttn/software/beguiled/

which makes pitiful attempts at security.  anyone is welcome to further
evolve it to 2.0 status if they wish (and send me patches!).
