insight 5.3 install

I've just downloaded insight-5.3 and would like to install it. But the
READMEs are inaccurate, nothing real obvious how to do it, and
absolutely nothing on the web site that gets you started. I know it's
free, but few people will ever use it if you have to investigate for an
hour just to install it. What's the deal, what am I missing here.
Why is something so simple appear confusing to you average user like me?
