Introduced in 1916 during World War I, the "Walking Liberty" silver Half
Dollar is generally regarded as America's most beautiful circulation
coin of the past Century. Clad in the Stars and Stripes, Miss Liberty
confidently strides into a new dawn, as a vigilant American Eagle
defends liberty on the reverse of the coin. Her right hand is extended
and her left hand holds branches of laurel and oak. The series was due
for retirement as America entered World War II, but was extended for the
duration of the war because of its splendid expression of patriotism.
