[COMMITTED PATCH] bit-rot patrol for stub configurations


I'm starting work on a new (non-Unix) port from scratch.  The first step is
always to do a build that is mostly using all the stub code.  I've found a
lot of bit-rot for that sort of setup, and fixed a bunch of it.  There will
be plenty more to come.

The following is all in one commit, because I'm lazy.  Future cleanups will
be somewhat more fine-grained.

I've tested that this makes no material difference to the x86_64-linux-gnu
build.
