Re: NTP dumps Linux, film at 11. [Fwd/FYI]

: Dear Linus,

: I thought I would forward a piece of mail to you from one of the NTP
: developers. Linux has fallen from grace in their eyes (which you
: perhaps already know). They are actively suggesting that people who
: need to use time synchronization (NTP) switch to using freebsd.

: The cited problems with Linux are that the published interfaces to the
: kernel (adjtimex and friends) change too frequently to be supportable.
: (The recent /proc/pci discussion is tangential but worth noting.) The
: slews of bug reports received by them are almost invariably about the
: Linux platform; other platforms do not seem to suffer. I've been
: actively testing the recent NTP implementations (ntp 4.0 series), trying
: to report bugs as seen under Linux 2.0, but enthusiasm for fixing the
: bugs on their end is all but nil.

Since I use NTP on my machines, I will do whatever I can to make sure
it works properly on Linux. We have ways to deal with adjtimex in
glibc 2. But I don't think it will work for libc 5. Please make
sure you are running a glibc 2 based system. If you still have
problems, please send me a note at hjl@lucon.org. BTW, where can I
find ntp 4.0?

Thanks.

: Kris,

: Dave would know better which tools are useful for debugging.

: One problem we've had is that the Linux kernel/syscall folks have a habit of

: It's more than neither Dave nor I have any Linux boxes - we've both looked
