Just for the fun of it, I am running glibc 2.1.1 configured with
i586-pc-linux and compiled with
CFLAGS="-mcpu=i586 -march=i586 -D__USE_STRING_INLINES -fstrict-aliasing -g -O3"
using egcs 1.1.2 on a Quad P/II Xoen with NIS. It works fine.
