Sounds like a plan.

Since "tarballs" is plural, does that mean another matched pair, one for
mainline and one modified to work with 3.0?

I agree that it's a good idea.  Are you keeping a list of what's changed
from .9x to .9x+1?  ('Cause I sure haven't been...)
