Hi,

the fix for this issue (see Bugzilla for details) turns out to be in
practice very simple (barring following optimizations): the patch would
be *really* short if only I didn't decide to "manually inline" the only
present use of _M_erase at the same time. I have also asked off-line
Matt Austern whether he can see any problem with it and otherwise mean
to apply it pretty soon to mainline for more testing...

Tested x86_64-linux.
