maybe caused by old sp code.

Install the current version of jade or openjade (more preferable), 
and use "configure --with-installed-nsgmls"

But you have to know that LDP currently starts moving toward
the DocBook DTD finally, though current HOWTOs are all written
in the LinuxDoc DTD yet.

You can get the source of Debian package of sgml-tools from

 http://www.debian.org/distrib/packages/

or

 ftp://ftp.debian.org/debian/dists/frozen/main/source/text/sgml-tools_1.0.9*

I can build them on my system with gcc 2.95.2 using 
"configure --with-installed-nsgmls".

(I have installed jade from the package.)
