In a roundabout way I think I've found the answer to my question, and
XSL is not the right place to do it.
What I'm looking for is an XLink-type link with a "show" attribute of
"embed", where somehow magic happens and the embedded XML is
transformed properly through an appropriate stylesheet.
I'd still be glad to hear of good solutions, though.
