The identity element for "min", at least in the numeric domain, is positive
infinity, and the identity element for "max" is negative infinity.  Don't
know if these are valid values for XSL numbers, though, my references are at
the office.

boolean false, which is so arbitrary I probably should have just raised an 
exception
