But it was tail recursion, so an alternative is just to have faith that
the implementers implement it in a way that the depth has no effect.
Of course neither your nor my solution is quite as concise as
bash$ echo fooBarJones | sed -e "s/\([A-Z]\)/_\1/g"
foo_Bar_Jones
