In both cases, your CDATA section is not doing anything useful.
<![CDATA just changes the meaning of , and & to be equivalent to <
and & as your string "sample.htm " doesn't contain either
& or < you can remove the CDATA.
I suspect that you want to trim white space from your element, with
<xsl:value-of select="normailze-space(image_url")"/>
