I had both in mind, (It's hard to think of node-set as an extension any
more:-) although it was the document() usage that made me stress it was
doable if inconvenient in xslt 1.0. As you say though document() might
not be general enough. However given the fact that node-set goes away in
xslt 2 (assuming xslt2 doesn't go the way of xslt 1.1) anyone arguing
for the addition of an new scoping mechanism needs to argue that the
benefits are worth the costs, given the features proposed in xslt 2.
