Well, the part of your stylesheet that you shared with us didn't copy the book
element to the result tree. It just appended a NOCODE attribute to what I can
only presume was an element added to the result tree prior to the invocation
of that template.
Perhaps you meant

<xsl:copy>
<xsl:if test="not(@ISBN)">
<xsl:attribute name="NOCODE">
<xsl:text>B01</xsl:text>
</xsl:attribute>
</xsl:if>
</xsl:copy>
</xsl:template>
