I love answering my own posts ;)
Seems the answer to this is probably not document at all, but the
use of extensions (see "how to text existance of file" in
http://www.biglist.com/lists/xsl-list/archives/200108/msg01585.html)
so that's half the problem, now if I could just solve mystery #1 :)
