this is what I was referring to:

        touch ac$$.c

            case "$EXTRA_CFLAGS" in
                *-mwin32*) ;;
                *) EXTRA_CFLAGS="-mwin32 $EXTRA_CFLAGS" ;;
        rm -f ac$$.o ac$$.c

and I suspect your goal here is to just force it on IFF the compiler
doesn't produce an error when you try the command?

In which case yes, it would have worked.. Gotta start being awake when I
read mail in the morning :]
