I can't get an xterm running and when I right click on the X icon in the system tray and 'exit' the submenu that comes up says that 0 processes are running. Attempting to launch an xterm from a cygwin window with "DISPLAY=127.0.0.1:0.0 && xterm &" fails with a message that it couldn't open the display. I am not sure what the parameters in the DISPLAY variable are, however, I have tried using LOCAL:0:0 and got the same effect. This occurs on a Dell Inspiron 8600 laptop and on a very recent buld HP Pavilion (Sempron processor). Both have the same cygwin packages installed, and I can ssh to my linux boxes on them wth no problem (though not from X, of course). The attached XWin log and config file are from this laptop. -------------- next part -------------- An embedded and charset-unspecified text was scrubbed... I connect via SSH, and run "startkde" - I get the KDE desktop in one single window. Works great! How do I connect to a second machine at the same time. See below for details. -Duane. For example: I login as my self - with ssh & a remote session And I login as another person to the same machine. In my case, I have two accounts: A development account And A Test account. Likewise, I have this situation: I login to Machine1 - and it works. I login to Machine2 - and it works. Problem: I can only have 1 connection to 1 machine at a time. Both should have separate window/display. I have done this with commercial X11 packages, but not CygwinX. This does not seem to work, and I can't seem to find in the user docs any thing that reasonably describes some things. (1) Yes, I have tried using a different display, ie: 127.0.0.1:0.0 And 127.0.0.1:1.0 That does not work when I have 2 sessions. The two displays work - independent of each other (2) I'm not sure what is going on with the /tmp/.X11-unix/dir And can't find docs for it - I suspect it is part of the problem. (3) I'm not sure what the "--screen" options do for the Xwin program. The script I to start the session (via SSH and public keys) is below, The difference between the two is WHO and DISPLAY. The script below - deletes the old /tmp/.X11-dir, which I know is a bad thing with 2 sessions. That's the solution - I forgot - is the same way on linux. Thank you very much, works *GREAT* For those reading this (via a search engine), if it is not specified, the default is :0 Which is Display 0, Below is a resulting template script that works very nicely, for me, with some limitations. I could - via additional shell tricks, do the following: 1) In the directory: /tmp/.X11-unix/ are unix "?sockets?" (visible only under CYGWIN not via windows). In my case, right now, I have these two files: /tmp/.X11-unix/X0 And /tmp/.X11-unix/X2 Thus right now, Display 0, and 2 are active, yours may be different. 2) I could write shellscript stuff that finds a free display number And uses that number - instead of hard coding the display number. I'll leave that as an exercise for you, the reader. 3) Also - one must deal with "cleanup" of stale files laying around. in some clean and graceful way. ============================================= Holger Krull> But i wonder how your first connect works anyway, have you setup ssh tunneling somewhere? Yes, I have, via my "~/.ssh/config" file - I have lots of things setup Including X-11 forwarding, my identity file, etc. That way I do not have to re-specify a zillion options everyplace I script SSH. Again, for those reading this via a search engine, my ssh_config file looks sort of like this I have many accounts, in this example I use R and X. Both Accounts have different user names. I could - specify -X, -L, -I, and - on every command line everywhere I use SSH --yuck, and --double-yuck Or - I can use an SSH config file (which hides/collects that sort of stuff in one nice little file. Blow is an example short snippit of an ssh config file (maybe with typos), I can type: 'ssh rrr' or 'ssh xxx' and it works just fine, see "man ssh_config" for more details I could add other host entries - like: "ssh plant1" or "ssh plant2" or "ssh home" and, if needed, with the cygwinX shellscript (and a fat pipe) run X sessions from anywhere in the world. Unfortunately, modality in X is not the same as in Windows. In X, the display (server), window manager, and client are separate processes, and have clearly defined roles. This is why it's possible to move the parent of a modal window, because the client is not responsible for its window's placement. In Windows, the client process is responsible for handling windows movement events, so the entire parent window, including the frame is effectively iced. I think the decision was taken that rather than inflict Windows' arguably broken concept of modality on an unsuspecting X process, all X windows are created as non-modal Windows windows. The modality at the client level is still maintained (i.e. you can't do anything in the parent), but you will still be able to move the parent window about. If you really need full X-style modality, you should be able to use one of the other modes (rootless or fullscreen) and run an external window manager. The only problem with this IIRC, is that all X windows are really just images in a single Windows window, so clicking on any X window brings all X windows to the top. Note that Windows' notion of stacking order is completely broken. Always-on-top windows are frequently rendered on the bottom. This includes modal windows, which is just great if they are rendered completely beneath the now disabled parent window! -- Unsubscribe info: http://cygwin.com/ml/#unsubscribe-simple Problem reports: http://cygwin.com/problems.html Documentation: http://x.cygwin.com/docs/ FAQ: http://x.cygwin.com/docs/faq/ From D.Ellis@metrologic.com Thu Jun 7 18:15:00 2007 From: D.Ellis@metrologic.com (Duane Ellis) Date: Thu, 07 Jun 2007 18:15:00 -0000 Subject: RH-EL-4 -vrs- RH-EL-5 Message-ID: Another problem has cropped up. The CygwinX is very new (I got a new computer 1 month ago and did a fresh install of cygwin) The relevant X11 versions are below (grepped from /etc/setup/install.db) Looking bash/cygwin window where I started the session, I do not see anything important etc - ie: timeout messages, just the 'normal bunch of warnings' same on all machines - including RHEL5 Any suggestions? -Duane. xorg-x11-base xorg-x11-base-6.8.99.901-1.tar.bz2 0 xorg-x11-bin xorg-x11-bin-6.8.99.901-1.tar.bz2 0 xorg-x11-bin-dlls xorg-x11-bin-dlls-6.8.99.901-1.tar.bz2 0 xorg-x11-bin-lndir xorg-x11-bin-lndir-6.8.99.901-1.tar.bz2 0 xorg-x11-devel xorg-x11-devel-6.8.99.901-1.tar.bz2 0 xorg-x11-etc xorg-x11-etc-6.8.99.901-1.tar.bz2 0 xorg-x11-f100 xorg-x11-f100-6.8.99.901-1.tar.bz2 0 xorg-x11-fcyr xorg-x11-fcyr-6.8.99.901-1.tar.bz2 0 xorg-x11-fenc xorg-x11-fenc-6.8.99.901-1.tar.bz2 0 xorg-x11-fnts xorg-x11-fnts-6.8.99.901-1.tar.bz2 0 xorg-x11-fscl xorg-x11-fscl-6.8.99.901-1.tar.bz2 0 xorg-x11-fsrv xorg-x11-fsrv-6.8.99.901-1.tar.bz2 0 xorg-x11-libs-data xorg-x11-libs-data-6.8.99.901-1.tar.bz2 0 xorg-x11-man-pages xorg-x11-man-pages-6.8.99.901-1.tar.bz2 0 xorg-x11-man-pages-html xorg-x11-man-pages-html-6.8.99.901-1.tar.bz2 0 xorg-x11-nest xorg-x11-nest-6.8.99.901-1.tar.bz2 0 xorg-x11-vfb xorg-x11-vfb-6.8.99.901-1.tar.bz2 0 xorg-x11-xwin xorg-x11-xwin-6.8.99.901-1.tar.bz2 0 xorg-x11-xwin-gl xorg-x11-xwin-gl-6.8.99.901-1.tar.bz2 0 -- Unsubscribe info: http://cygwin.com/ml/#unsubscribe-simple Problem reports: http://cygwin.com/problems.html Documentation: http://x.cygwin.com/docs/ FAQ: http://x.cygwin.com/docs/faq/ From holger.krull@gmx.de Thu Jun 7 19:25:00 2007 From: holger.krull@gmx.de (Holger Krull) Date: Thu, 07 Jun 2007 19:25:00 -0000 Subject: RH-EL-4 -vrs- RH-EL-5 In-Reply-To: References: Message-ID: <46685B88.60008@gmx.de> Duane Ellis schrieb: > Now, New machine RedHat Enterprise Linux 5 > > But when connecting to RH-EL-5 - provided I do nothing with the keyboard it > works perfectly. > > I suspect RH-EL-5 is provoking something in CygwinX - I do not know. The only problem with this IIRC, is that all X > windows are really just images in a single Windows window, so > clicking on any X window brings all X windows to the top. Its not an acceptable solution for us. The goal is to make a few mission-critical Motif apps available on some PCs running XP, where they will be used infrequently but their availabibility would be very helpful. But I am not opposed in principle to adding some ad-hoc code to our applications to enforce modality 'a la X' from the client side. For that, of course, one has to be able to sense the server is cygwin (xdpyinfo shows its possible), and a way either to speak directly to the underlying MSWIN stuff, or some WM property that *is* honored by cygwin. Rough idea: put in the title bar a string like 'pid+z', and run on MSWIN a daemon that will restack all windows with a given pid according to Z. > > Note that Windows' notion of stacking order is completely broken. > Always-on-top windows are frequently rendered on the bottom. I recently noticed the same problem that is described here: http://sourceware.org/ml/cygwin-xfree/2007-02/msg00060.html When logging in with cygwin and using kde, xwin.exe freezes after I have typed a key in konsole or any input field. A "top" on the console shows nothing special, XWin.exe -logverbose 3 gives no hint. The behaviour is strongly related to kde, since with gnome or fvwm everything is fine. The reason why I post here is: 1) With another X Server ( XThinPro ), everything is fine 2) Dito with a very old version of cygwin: everything is fine. 3) kde on the machine itself (i.e. not over xdmcp) works fine. So this seems to me more related to cygwin then to kde. It would be great if you could tell me what I have messed up. I don't know which logfiles could be of any help, so please tell me which information you would need. I attach cygcheck output for the version that freezes (cygcheck-new.out) and for the old version that is running fine (cygcheck-old.out). The first bug was reported on the main list for the chere+xterm combination, which boils down to the users environment in windows. I don't use cygwin+X much myself, so I'd like to ask a few questions as to how people typically have their PC setup with cygwin+X. 1. Do you set DISPLAY in the windows environment? Is it recommended? 2. Do you set the windows PATH to include /usr/X11R6/bin? Is it recomended? 3. If DISPLAY is not set in the environment, would it ever be anything other than 127.0.0.1 if you were trying to start an xterm from explorer? 4. Is run.exe always available on an X install? In other words, would there be general unhappiness if I were to set the (chere) xterm startup command to something along the lines of: %cygwin%\bin\run.exe -p /usr/X11R6/bin %cygwin%\bin\xterm.exe -display 127.0.0.1:0.0 -e /bin/xhere /bin/bash.exe "%L" Does anyone have a better solution for starting xterm? I think you should use just "-display :0" as that is the generic way to say "the first local display". Although, if the user has more than one X server running, they probably already have thier DISPLAY set, so in that case what's really needed is a -set-display-if-its-not-already-set option. Also, I don't know how much scripting you can pack into a one-liner, but there is always the checkX utility whose sole purpose in life is to tell if an X server is running. With it you could give a more friendly error when there's no X server than just a window flashing and disappearing or nothing happening. I am currently using 6.8.99.901-4 of XWin, although I have had the following problem through several cygwin updates now. I am using XWin to start an XDMCP session to an Ubuntu box running a GNOME desktop via gdm. The current version of Ubuntu is 7.04 although I have had this problem going against 6.10 and 6.06 as well. Everything runs fine for me for some intermittent amount of time and then I inevitably wind up losing the visibility of the mouse pointer in the X server. Sometimes I can run for 2 days, sometimes only for 2 hours. I have not been able to find a pattern of when this happens. The mouse if still "functional" in that you can move around and click, you just can't see where you are because it's invisible. This is only when the pointer is in the X window, it I bring the mouse outside of X and back onto the window's desktop or other window's application it reappears. Moving back over the X window causes it to disappear again. If I kill the X server and restart it, things will come up fine and work again for some random time before the problem happens again. If I ALT-F4 to kill the X server, I notice that the "Exiting will close all screens running on this display..." dialog that pops up also refuses to show the pointer, so it is as if there is some weird hide/show bug effecting the XWin process. Here are some system details. Please let me know if there is anything I can try or any other data I can provide. Thank You. Start the X server first (xstartwin). If that doesn't work, then your firewall and/or virus scanner are likely to blame, disabled or not. Actually, Holger, it does, in that it tells me more. In that mode, it NEVER fails. That is to say: 1) SSH into the box and run(a complete KDE) "startkde" Locks up as I describe. 2) SSH into the box - run "gnome-session" I had forgotten about GNOME... Duh.. Works - no problem. 3) SSH into the box - run "xterm" (ie: xterm raw, no window dressing, title bar, etc) Works just fine - I can run firefox - works fine 4) Continuing from #3 - xterm raw, no window manager I can run "twm" - which gives me window dressing, title bar, etc) Works just fine - No problem. Thus the only combination that does not work is RH-EL-5, "startkde" and SSH and CYGWIN-X Note: I have no direct access to the machine, my only access is via SSH (cygwin-openSSH to be exact). I've gotten it to work reasonably well on Vista Home Premium. Try running the Cygwin setup as Administrator and in XP Compatibility Mode. Also, I had better luck when I did the install in two stages: first, I just downloaded the packages, then I ran setup again and chose the install from local repository option. Finally, make sure that your firewall is not blocking Xwin.exe or bash.exe. I also agree with Holger regarding Xming. Xming works just fine on Vista, and you can use Xming as your X Server when running PuTTY or many if not all of the Cygwin X-based apps. Hope this helps, Scott > > There is no version for Vista. You mentioned initially that you have DISPLAY set in your startxwin.bat. Don't recall off-hand whether that's in there by default (and I'm not at a machine that has Cygwin-X installed).
