Try looking in the FAQ - there's a link to it at the bottom of every message on the list. This is almost always caused by choosing to install for DOS style text files. If this is what you did, be advised that this causes all sorts of other problems, so if you've only just installed cygwin, I'd recommend deleting your cygwin installation directory and reinstalling from scratch. -- Unsubscribe info: http://cygwin.com/ml/#unsubscribe-simple Problem reports: http://cygwin.com/problems.html Documentation: http://x.cygwin.com/docs/ FAQ: http://x.cygwin.com/docs/faq/ From james@expose-it.tv Tue Feb 5 21:31:00 2008 From: james@expose-it.tv (Expose-it) Date: Tue, 05 Feb 2008 21:31:00 -0000 Subject: Incompetence at Eskom may have cost SA 2010 World Cup Message-ID: <20080205212630.2C11614B03B@mx2.vodamail.co.za> www.expose-it.tv -- Unsubscribe info: http://cygwin.com/ml/#unsubscribe-simple Problem reports: http://cygwin.com/problems.html Documentation: http://x.cygwin.com/docs/ FAQ: http://x.cygwin.com/docs/faq/ From xoporoti84445@hotmail.com Wed Feb 6 09:03:00 2008 From: xoporoti84445@hotmail.com (xoporoti84445) Date: Wed, 06 Feb 2008 09:03:00 -0000 Subject: US Navy is in testing stage of this product Message-ID: PERT Continues to move. Ignore this. It means nothing. > > Fatal server error: > could not open default font 'fixed' This is what is keeping you from working. As I remember my solution was some combo of the following items: 1.) Re-installing Cygwin with "Default Text File Type" set to "Unix / binary". This causes cygwin to use "LF" instead of "CR/LF" for the End-Of-Line terminator. 2.) cd /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts mkfontdir * This rebuilds the */fonts.dir files with the correct EOL. Hope this helps. Message-ID: <6C4E929C8932EE468537E8E9B7CA564B9E3F86@ult-mail2k3-01.ultimate.com> I've got an install of several hundred PC's all running cygwin-X. One of the issues we are having is that we run "startxwin.bat" when the PC starts up but when the users go to shutdown the register they get an error screen of "Unable to shutdown cygwin-x. Please press end now or cancel." And the shutdown sits there until they press end now. This is horribly annoying our users and it's starting to crawl back up the chain to be an real issue vs "just press the button you lazy user". Does anyone have any thoughts about what might be preventing cygwin from shutting down properly? -- Unsubscribe info: http://cygwin.com/ml/#unsubscribe-simple Problem reports: http://cygwin.com/problems.html Documentation: http://x.cygwin.com/docs/ FAQ: http://x.cygwin.com/docs/faq/ From MAllen@utcretail.com Mon Feb 18 16:42:00 2008 From: MAllen@utcretail.com (Allen, Matthew) Date: Mon, 18 Feb 2008 16:42:00 -0000 Subject: Problem setting permissions in X. My script works correctly when invoked from a Cygwin rxvt window, but does not work correctly when run from a Windows shortcut. Actually it's only a small (but critical) part of the script that doesn't work correctly when run from a Windows command shell or Windows shortcut. Part of the script involves adding a new font path to my existing X font path. The part of the script that does this consist of the following two lines (any line breaks that may appear here due to the mail system are not in the actual script file): C:\cygwin\usr\X11R6\bin\xset fp+ "/cygdrive/c/Program Files/Wolfram Research/Mathematica/6.0/SystemFiles/Fonts/Type1" C:\cygwin\usr\X11R6\bin\xset fp rehash As I said, when I run the script containing these lines from a Cygwin rxvt window, the new font path is added to the existing X font path, but when I invoke the script from a Windows command shell the new path doesn't get added. I've tried adding various escape characters (e.g., extra quotes, extra backslashes) to the font path name in the script file without any improvement. I'm having a hard time trying to determine what is actually happening. For example, I can see the output from xset commands when I invoke the script from a Cygwin rxvt window, but they don't show up when I invoke the script from a Windows command shell. Any suggestions on how to fix this or debug the problem more successfully? For example, when I enter the command xset -q the response is xset: unable to open display "" The same is true even if the xset command is called from within a bash shell script which itself is called from a Windows/DOS shell. So it's not due to bash or DOS. Rather, it's because the calling program doesn't have an X display to communicate with. As confirmation of this, I observe that the problem does not occur when I call the same script from a Cygwin/rxvt shell because this shell has an X display already defined. It would be nice to be able to update the X font path on the fly and only when I want to start up this particular application, but short of that, adding the necessary font path to the permanent X font path would be OK too. Indeed, xset does have a '-display' option and using it with 'localhost:0.0' fixed the problem with my Windows/DOS script. The next question is this: At the end of my script I start Mathematica on the remote computer and display its front end in a local X window with this command rxvt -e ssh -Y remote_computer_name mathematica This works but leaves behind a superfluous RXVTerm that I'd rather not see. This should work without the extra RXVTerm, but doesn't ssh -Y remote_computer_name mathematica Why? jjo -- Unsubscribe info: http://cygwin.com/ml/#unsubscribe-simple Problem reports: http://cygwin.com/problems.html Documentation: http://x.cygwin.com/docs/ FAQ: http://x.cygwin.com/docs/faq/ From reply-to-list-only-lh-x@cygwin.com Wed Feb 20 01:05:00 2008 From: reply-to-list-only-lh-x@cygwin.com (Larry Hall (Cygwin X)) Date: Wed, 20 Feb 2008 01:05:00 -0000 Subject: problem debugging xset command inside batch script (revised) In-Reply-To: References: <28872-92179@sneakemail.com> <6C4E929C8932EE468537E8E9B7CA564BA2C3A0@ult-mail2k3-01.ultimate.com> Message-ID: <47BB7CC2.8060802@cygwin.com> jjo wrote: > Allen, Matthew utcretail.com> writes: > >> You should be able to simply set the DISPLAY variable and get xset to >> work that way.
