purpose of: mount entry \\.\tape0: /dev/st0 ??

Can anybody tell me what the purpose and "secret" of the default mount
entries is/are:

\\.\tape0: /dev/st0

I would like to work with my scsi tape drive "/dev/st0" from the likes of "tar"
"afio" "dd" etc.

What's the secret to accessing those devices? Is it environment settings?
Which ones - what's the syntax.

Many thanks,

Urs
