I encounter a similar problem. Apparently, files with a trailing "." are
mapped to files without any extension.
$ touch ab. cd.
$ ls -l
-rw-r--r-- 1 administ JRW 0 Apr 17 18:21 ab
-rw-r--r-- 1 administ JRW 0 Apr 17 18:21 cd
$ rm ab.
$ ls -l
-rw-r--r-- 1 administ JRW 0 Apr 17 18:21 cd
$ rm cd
$ ls -l
total 0
