_imp__cerr undefined reference / mingw32

I'm trying to build the aspell package using the latest versions of
cygwin and gcc provided with mingw32.
The whole package builds...until the very end at the final link where
I get this error:

...and it goes on. This is extremely frustrating, I've tried every trick
in the book that I know and I cannot see why it fails to link against the
MS libraries correctly, everything else seems
to work. I've had a good look thru the archives and found nothing
conclusive that addresses this issue. Can someone help?
