I have had this problem for some time now and was going to reformat
(sometime eventually when I had time) but hey for eduacational purposes here
is my complete installation and config info:
AMD Athlon 700
DFI something or another MOBO
Voodoo 3 3500
Realtech 8139 NIC
Ensonique Audio PCI Sound Card
HP - USB CD-Writer
2x DVDDrive (on secondary IDE)
30G Western Digital HD
3 partitions 5, 10, 15
Belkin Optikal Mouse
Memorex quiet key keyboard
Win2k (not service packed)
DirectX 7 (not 8)
Media Player 7
Voodoo 3500 Visual Reality TV
Cygwin (latest version downloaded a week ago)
Age of Empires 2
MS Visual J++
Winzip and other misc apps like that.
also I would like to add that when the xserver is not running it takes xterm
a couple of seconds (like 10) as apposed if the x server (both omni x or
Xwin) is started Xterm comes back right away saying it cannot open display

hope this helps

I'll admit that I'm no expert on why X would refuse connections from clients
running on the local machine.
Therefore, I call on you guys to tell us what it is that is unique about
your software configurations that causes this problem. I would be willing
to bet that if any of you grabbed a spare hard drive and installed Windows,
Cygwin, and Cygwin/XFree86 from scratch, without installing any other
programs, your X clients would be able to connect to the X server.
Prove me wrong.
Tell us why Cygwin/XFree86 does not work on your machine.
I think I speak for most of the list when I humbly say that I have no idea
what is causing your problems.
Good luck, and I look forward to hearing what the problem is,
