backslash difference in NTEmacs/CygWin in compile buffer

Is this a known (or even maybe fixed) problem?:

Backslashes given in commands executed in an Emacs compilation buffer
running CygWin bash are interpreted differently than on a standard Linux
setup.

In NTEmacs with CygWin bash, if I do M-x compile RET and give a command of
"echo \x \\x \\\x", I get a result of "x x \x".

In Emacs on Linux bash, if I do M-x compile RET and give a command of
"echo \x \\x \\\x", I get a result of "x \x \x", as expcted.

It seems that an extra level of command parsing/"unescaping" is being done,
as if some parameter quoting is missing somewhere.

Can anyone else confirm this problem? Any ideas where to look?

My NTEmacs says it is:
GNU Emacs 20.7.1 (i386-*-nt4.0.1381) of Tue Jun 13 2000 on buffy
