I've just tried repeatedly to upgrade cygwin 1.5 on a Windows Server 2003 system. I'm using the latest setup.exe. I chose Install from Local Directory (I downloaded all the updates previously). libncurses-devel keeps causing problems, so I make it Keep and upgraded the rest. When I try to make it do something with libncurses-devel (a package required by readline, by the way), I see Uninstalling libncurses-devel and progress blue status bar is full and the total bar is empty. Then setup.exe's window closes. setup.exe has generated errors and will be closed by Windows. You will need to restart the program. An error log is being created. I'm assuming the "error log" is an Application Event Log entry. It is Source: Application Error Category: (100) Event ID: 1000 Failing application setup.exe, version 0.0.0.0, faulting module setup.exe, version 0.0.0.0, fault address 0x000f42cb. for uninstall. Or 0xc01ffeac for reinstall. Or 0x80840334 for upgrade to the current version. Keep works. Oo-er, the most recent attempt (upgrade to the current version) gave a different error box: Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library Runtime error! Program: This application has request the Runtime to terminate it in an unusual way. Please contact the application's support team for more information. We have MinGW installed, but that's never caused a problem with setup.exe before. This may be related to a permissions problem. We installed Cygwin while running as user Administrator. The first time I ran setup this evening, I ran it as my normal user, which is in the Administrators group, except that I believe that Administrators does not have permissions on all files. It hit problems trying to update a man page, though I forget which one and which package. I told it to Continue, but it hung (flickering the status window) at that file. I cancelled, logged back in as Administrator, and tried again, with the results as above. I rebooted soon after the first failure, which should have taken care of the "upgrade on next reboot" threatened by Continue. Didn't help. Personally, I'm not so interested in diagnosing why setup.exe is dying without an error message. I just want to upgrade libncurses-devel, or reinstall it, or even uninstall it and readline and then install the newest version of each, or SOMETHING to unstick them. -- Tim McDaniel; Reply-To: tmcd@panix.com
