The exact date of the snapshot used would matter; this is (roughly)
obtained from 'ld -v'. I don't know in which of the binutils snapshots
HJ had picked up the symbol visibility code from CVS; it is definitely
in

GNU ld version 2.9.5 (with BFD 2.9.5.0.35)

and it is not part of

GNU ld version 2.9.5 (with BFD 2.9.5.0.16)
