Oops, I think I did edit it in an attempt to narrow the scope of the search for
a problem.  Sorry for the misstatement; I have too many irons in the fire.  I
was trying to make the patch work - but I think the real problem was more in
the balky tools than in the patch.  Eventually I got the tools working, but
never went back to include all of the patch.
