Reiteration of this point in all of your messages does not serve any
useful purpose.

A quick scan of your reply seemed to show that you are asking for
features and outlining well-known shortcomings.  Unless you are

I was asking why the *specific* change needed to be implemented.  You
did not answer my question.  But that's ok.  This particular case is
closed anyway.

If someone has ported rpm to mingw that would certainly be interesting.
Otherwise, this is a cart-before-the-horse situation.

I love perl/awk/shell scripts.  I use them quite frequently.  I was
actually suggesting that they would be an alternative to the suggested
patch.  I think that, in general, wrapping your installation needs in a
wrapper is a fine idea.
