git checkout fails in scallywag

  Despite my confident assertion that this was someone else's problem, I 
did find something which maybe I was doing wrong to cause it.

(Annoying, I think this only happens on some particular version of the 
builder image, which we seem to randomly get given sometimes)

I've made a small change to try to address that.

I'd like to know if this problem is still occurring, so if it happens 
again, please let me know.
