Hi Dave,
catched the PEBCAK problem

I needed a full 
CC=gcc-4 CPP=cpp-4 CXX=g++-4 ./configure

instead of the 
CC=gcc-4  ./configure

suggested by README

Of course as the fault is on _cygwin_crt0_common.cc

:-((
