Interesting analysis but you're doing an if test on a constant (len)
where you (apparently) know that the length is > 65535.  Why not just
use another constant and a comment in QueryDosDevice?

FWIW, this probably wouldn't cause a problem in my sandbox other than
not detecting the correct name.  My dtable.cc is slightly different.

I guess it should be UNICODE everywhere since the most likely result
of running handle_to_fn is to return an on-disk filename.
