Cygwin/XFree86 does not currently support 8 bits per pixel.

You need to switch Windows into a depth other than 8 bpp, as Cygwin/XFree86
must run at the current depth being used by Windows, unless you are running
in fullscreen with a DirectDraw engine, in which case Cygwin/XFree86 will
change the bit depth the value passed on the command line.  In other words,
the depth that you pass to Cygwin/XFree86 is ignored in most cases.
