Connection reset by peer

I installed xfree86 recently and received the following error when using
"startxwin.bat".

XIO:  fatal IO error 104 <Connection reset by peer after 0 requests <0 known
processed> with 0 events remaining.

XIO:  fatal IO error 104 <Connection reset by peer> on X server "localhost:0.0"
after 0 requests <0 known processed> with 0 events remaining.


Something must be wrong with my configuration.  Any clues?
