getpid() problems

I tried the getpid() function under winNT 4.0 using beta 17.1

The problem is that the pid that getpid() returns it's not the same as
that shown by the Task Manager.

Any suggestion ?

By the way, does anyone know how to check if a process with a given pid
is alive ?
