v18 vs v17 compile times....

>From this (statistically irrelevant) test, version 18 appears about 27% slower 
than version 17.1.  

Somebody else already asked, but I did not see the answer to the question, "Is 
it (reasonably) easy to build without or turn off symbolic links?"
