B20.1: make problem under win95 with "echo" and other commands

We have a makefile that uses "echo" to print some stuff to the screen;
when we run it under WinNT 4.0 it works as expected.

However, when we run the makefile under Win95, it prints out:

"Bad command or filename"

Can anyone offer any insight into the problem?
