code writing

This question doesnt actually 
have to do with cygwin but it has to do with something thats related to it where 
do you actually write source code and can you get into the source code of a file 
thats already been compiled. what i mean by where you write source code is it in 
microsoft word or what If you could please answer my question i will be 
gratefull
