Answer:
Yes, the backquoted text from `hostname` does include the final carriage
return.
No, the version of hostname bash was picking was *not* from the cygwin
distribution.
I gather cygwin bash doesn't attempt to mediate between the DOS and Unix
conventions
in cases like this, it will strip \n and leave \r as is.
