sleep make overload

Hello !

I made a process what's like this:

while (1)
	{
	sleep(5);
	printf(opened_file,"k\n");
	}

It's making about 14% processor load on a PII 500 MS NT Machine ?
Who know why ?
Exist another good sleep function ?
