problem with tar -xvzf and permissions on W2K

Uhm, no. The '-' and '--' usages are the correct ones. The '-'-free
usage of tar is explicitely noted as "old option style" in the
tar info file. GNU tar tries to be as compatible as possible so
the old option style will be supported for at least forever or so.
