The packages themselves generally have READMEs, man/info pages, and other
documentation. If you don't want to download the package to find out
about it (although this list highly discourages picking-and-choosing your
packages if you don't know that you won't need them), you can check the
email archives for announcements of the packages. There's often some
brief description of what's in it.
