kde 3.0 no icons

I'm glad that a workaround for this has been found, but I'd be more interested in understanding the root of the problem (which could ultimately lead to a solution).  Mostly because I whuggle my 32 bit color depth :)

What do you programmers think?  Wherein does the problem lie?
