the following comment appears at line 1297 of the latest snapshot code,
and regards the implementation of conv_path_list.


   SRC is not a const char * because we temporarily modify it to ease
   the implementation.

however, conv_path_list *does* take a const char * called src, and it
makes  a copy of it into a non-const alloca'd string called srcbuf.
