portable install on usb flash drive?

Depends on what you install.  You won't get any services for free.
You'll also need to update /etc/passwd and /etc/group to reflect the
current users and their SIDs on each system.  Then you want to set
up your mounts via 'mount'.  But yes, it will work just fine.
