make refuses to enter "unix-mode"

Markus,

The error you reported above makes little sense without [at least the
relevant snippet of] the Makefile.

You can get the source of make by checking the "Src" box for the "make"
package in setup.exe.  You will find it in /usr/src/make-<version>/
