Wayne,

I'm not talking about repeating a command (and it's period / dot / "." 
that does that, not ESC), I'm talking about repeating (while in input 
mode) the sequence entered the last time you were in input mode. Of 
course, ESC terminates input mode and takes you back to command mode.
