Nope,

read from bash don't reconize control caracters without -e parameter:
$ read _cygwin
Ntser[Backspace]c
$ echo $_cygwin | od -t x1
0000000 6e 74 73 65 72 08 63 0a
0000010

BUT OK with "-e"

$ read -e _cygwin
Ntser[Backspace]c
$ echo $_cygwin | od -t x1
0000000 6e 74 73 65 63 0a
0000006
